The teaser of Netflix’s new anime Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s popular comic books, introduces bass guitarist Scott Pilgrim and his rock band members before showcasing some fan-favourite moments like Scott’s first encounter with his ‘dream girl’ Ramona flowers.
Dropped on Wednesday, the one-minute-seven-second-long teaser offers a glimpse into the show’s main characters and its comic book-inspired aesthetics. It begins with a member of Scott’s rock band Sex Bob-omb screaming “We are Sex Bob-omb!” before counting to three during a gig. We see Scott's first encounter with Ramona, a ‘ninja delivery girl’ who works for Amazon in Canada, in a dream.
The art style remains faithful to the colourful visuals of the original Scott Pilgrim comic books, while the chiptune-based score teased in the video is sung by the pop band Anamanaguchi.
Written by O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, the eight-episode anime show is directed by Abel Gongora and created by the Japanese animation studio Science SARU, which is famous for developing anime series and movies such as Devilman Crybaby (2018), Ride your wave (2019), Inu-Oh (2021) and Star Wars: Visions (2021). Scott Pilgrim is slated to release on Netflix US on November 17.
The story revolves around young bass guitarist Scott Pilgrim who has to win his dream girl Ramona’s heart by taking on her previous seven romantic partners as well as the world.
In 2010, Edgar Wright came out with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World — a film adaptation of the cult-favourite comics. It was also adapted into a video game named Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game.
The original cast members of the 2010 film will return to lend their voices to the characters in the anime adaptation. Michael Cera who played Scott in Wright’s film, is revealed as the voice actor for the protagonist in the anime, while Mary Elizabeth Winstead will reprise her role as the voice actor for Ramona Flowers.
