Netflix has decided against renewing German mystery thriller series 1899 despite the first season of the popular show garnering positive response from viewers and critics, the makers of the show have revealed on social media.

“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned,” the makers of the show, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, wrote on social media.

Friese and bo Odar were the co-showrunners and executive producers of 1899. Friese served as the writer and bo Odar directed the thriller.

1899 secured the second place in Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 list of most-watched English series, with almost 80 million hours in just four days after release on November 17.

The mystery thriller was also one of the most-watched shows across OTT platforms in India, as per Ormax’s weekly surveys. According to their latest report, 1899 was the ninth most-watched series in India between December 23 and 29.

After the show dropped on Netflix, fans were also quick to draw parallels between the storylines in 1899 and Dark, which was created by the same team. 1899 revolves around a group of emigrants travelling from the UK to New York City, USA, to start their life afresh. Mysterious happenings on the steamship Kerberos after discovery of another migrant ship turns their journey into a horrifying nightmare.

1899 begins with the discovery of a mysterious child while the events in Dark revolve around a village where two children go missing. “What is lost will be found” was a phrase commonly used in 1899, giving rise to fan theories of a possible crossover between the two shows.

A state-of-the-art virtual production stage was created by the makers for the production of 1899. The series starred Andreas Pietschmann, Emily Beecham, Mathilde Ollivier, Miguel Bernardeau, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Aneurin Barnard, Maciej Musiał and Clara Rosager.
