Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar will return for a second season on Netflix, the streamer announced on Monday.

A flash mob of 100 dancers, dressed in costumes similar to the outfits worn by the show’s characters, revealed the news through a spirited performance during a fan event at Carter Road, Mumbai.

“Mehfil phir se jamegi, Heeramandi: Season 2 jo aa raha hai ,” the streamer wrote on X alongside a one-minute-24-second long video of the flash mob performance.

Since its debut on May 1, Heeramandi has skyrocketed to the top of Netflix's global non-English TV chart in 43 countries, becoming the most-watched Indian series on the platform worldwide. Domestically, it has maintained its position at No. 1 on India's Top 10 chart since its premiere.

Set against the backdrop of Lahore in the 1940s, the first season of Heeramandi delves into the lives of courtesans who reside in Heeramandi. The narrative revolves around the power-play between Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala), the matriarch of Heeramandi, and her ambitious niece Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha), who seeks to usurp her aunt's position.

Alongside Manisha and Sonakshi, Heeramandi Season 1 also featured Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Segal and Taha Shah Badussha in key roles.

The upcoming season will follow the journey of these women after the partition of India in 1947. “In Heeramandi 2, the women now come from Lahore to the film world. They leave Lahore after the partition and most of them settle in the Mumbai film industry or Kolkata film industry. So that journey in the bazaar remains the same. They still have to dance and sing, but this time for the producers and not for the nawabs. So that’s the second season we are planning, let’s see where it goes,” Bhansali told American entertainment magazine Variety.
