Netflix announced on Friday that its recently released live-action series One Piece, based on Eiichiro Oda’s ongoing manga of the same name, will be renewed for a second season.

“ATTENTION STRAW HAT CREW. ONE PIECE HAS BEEN RENEWED!!!” the streamer posted on X alongside a one-minute-42-second long video featuring Oda.

The video begins with the 48-year-old manga writer answering a call through a transponder snail or a snail phone, which has been used for vocal and visual communication throughout the One Piece universe. “It seems people around the world have been enjoying the show, which makes the hard work from the production team worth it,” he says, before adding, “Two weeks after the launch, I received the great news…Netflix has decided to renew the show!”

Oda ends the video by throwing a hint about a new addition to the cast in the next season. He goes on to draw a sketch of Tony Tony Chopper, who is a doctor in Luffy’s pirate crew and one of the senior officers of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet.

The writer, however, asks fans to stay patient since it is likely to take some time for the production team to prepare the script.

Set in the world of pirates, One Piece revolves around Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy who aspires to become a pirate king. He embarks on a quest to assemble his very own pirate crew to find the fabled One Piece — a treasure in the Grand Line, a gigantic ocean current circling around the planet — which the pirate king Gold Roger had mentioned in his last words before his public execution by navy officers.

The anime adaptation of the manga series, which began in 1997, was produced by Toei Animation studios. It premiered on Fuji TV in October 1999 and is still streaming with over a thousand episodes.

Directed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda jointly and supervised by Oda himself, One Piece live-action series continues to be at No. 1 on Netflix’s top 10 global list since its debut on August 31.
