After its popular live-action show One Piece, Netflix has announced an anime adaptation of the series in collaboration with WIT Studio, Fuji Television and Shueisha publishers to mark the 25th anniversary of Eiichiro Oda’s manga.
The streaming platform shared the news alongside a teaser on Sunday, the second day of the popular manga and anime convention Jump Festa 2024. “ANNOUNCEMENT! Recreating the story of the original ‘ONE PIECE’ manga, starting from the East Blue arc, ‘THE ONE PIECE’ is coming to @Netflix.”
The teaser shows scenes from the anime with a red overlay and subtitles, introducing fans to the new series which will be covering the East Blue arc of the manga. “The legend that began 25 years ago…spread far and wide across the globe…in this interconnected world…let’s embark on a journey…once again,” the subtitle reads as monstages of several scenes from the anime are showcased.
It also shows an animator drawing scenes on a piece of paper with a few volumes of Oda’s manga by his side. “With an all new animation team, get ready for a fresh new remake,” another subtitle in the video reads, hinting at the new series having a completely new team.
One Piece was first adapted into an anime series by TOEI Animation in 1999 and is currently ongoing with its latest episode covering the final arc of Oda’s manga, the Egghead Arc. The Netflix remake is expected to retain the original voice actors as the new teaser ends with the voiceover of Mayumi Tanaka, who lends her voice to the protagonist Luffy in the ongoing anime.
Set in the world of pirates and running for over a thousand episodes, the original anime series revolves around Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy who sets out on a quest and assembles his own pirate crew to find the fabled One Piece — a treasure hidden by the pirate king Gol D. Roger in the Grand Line.
Earlier, Netflix had released a live-action adaptation of One Piece under Oda’s supervision on August 31. It went on to become a global hit with 37.8 million views amassed in less than two weeks since its release.
