Global streaming giant Netflix has joined hands with Indian production company Yash Raj Films (YRF) for a multi-year partnership that will enable them to jointly create digital content for viewers around the world.
“Netflix and Yash Raj Films join forces to bring a new era of blockbusters! Coming soon,” the streamer posted on X on Friday morning. The partnership will “mark a new era of storytelling in India,” the post further read.
According to US-based entertainment magazine Variety, the partnership's inaugural offering is the highly anticipated four-part thriller series The Railway Men. This project serves as a poignant tribute to the unsung heroes of the tragic 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. The Railway Men spotlights the valiant efforts of the Bhopal railway station workers who saved countless lives during this crisis.
The ensemble cast for The Railway Men is led by actors R. Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon, Divyenndu Sharma and the emerging talent Babil Khan. The show marks Dhoom 3 assistant director Shiv Rawail’s debut as a director.
Variety also reported that the Netflix-YRF partnership will unveil another compelling project, Maharaj, a film set in the 1800s. This film is a David-and-Goliath saga that chronicles how a courageous journalist takes on a revered societal figurehead, lauded by many as a saviour of the masses. The film will mark the debut of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan. It also boasts a stellar cast including Jaideep Ahlawat, Sharvari and Shalini Pandey. Siddharth P. Malhotra of Hichki fame will helm the film.
Yash Raj Films has had a spectacular year in 2023, with Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, emerging as the biggest Indian box office hit of the year. The studio also distributed Shah Rukh’s second blockbuster of the year, Jawan, internationally.
Netflix, too, has reaped the rewards of its association with YRF, with the success of The Romantics, a documentary series that delved into the life and legacy of YRF's founder Yash Chopra.
