Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui on Friday clarified that he doesn't support the practice of banning films, rubbishing news reports of him justifying the ban on The Kerala Story.
“Please stop spreading false news just to get some views and hits, it’s called cheap TRP - I never said and I would never want any film to be banned ever. STOP BANNING FILMS. STOP SPREADING FAKE NEWS,” the 49-year-old wrote on Twitter, calling out news portals for carrying his fake statement on banning The Kerala Story carried by some portals.
His remark comes a day after a news site reported that the actor was in agreement of The Kerala Story getting banned in certain states in India. “If a film has the power to break people and social harmony, it’s extremely wrong. Humein iss duniya ko jodna hai, todna nahi hai. (We need to unify the world, not break it),” the news site quoted Nawazuddin.
Adah Sharma-starrer The Kerala Story, helmed by Sudipto Sen, was banned in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu after its release on May 5. The ban was ordered by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee “to maintain peace in the state”.
The Kerala Story centres around the life of three nursing students who become the victim of religious conversion after marriage and are forced to join the terror organisation ISIS.
Also starring Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani and Siddhi Idnani, the film has collected over Rs 213 crores since release.
