The Prime Video series Call Me Bae starring Ananya Panday may have had its share of brickbats but the announcement of a second season shows the kind of adulation that’s been coming its way. Apart from Ananya, who plays Bae with aplomb, here are the other three women actors who help carry the Dharmatic Entertainment show on their shoulders.
Lisa Mishra
As TV primetime news show producer Harleen Babbar, singer-songwriter Lisa Mishra looks the part in her acting debut.
In Call Me Bae, the Chicago-bred Lisa plays a sharp and sensitive, independent woman who is successful professionally but is unable to call her celebrity TV anchor boyfriend — played to perfection by Vir Das — out for his toxicity. To see her finally owning her power and putting an end to being manipulated by him is a big win.
There’s a certain degree of restraint, calm and dignity in Lisa’s performance, which is a perfect foil for Bae’s bubbliness. Lisa had shot to fame after singing a mashup version of the Veere Di Wedding number Taarefan. She has also lent her voice in Call Me Bae and will soon be seen in Netflix’s The Royals.
Niharika Lyra Dutt
Niharika’s distinctive looks and personality shine through her performances in Call Me Bae, Choona and Paatal Lok. The daughter of filmmaker-writer-actor Avijit Dutt plays a TV journalist in Call Me Bae after a similar turn in Paatal Lok. In Call Me Bae, Niharika’s Tammarrah Pawwarh is a goal-driven ambitious young professional who has no time for play but things change with the arrival of Bae and she finds love in unexpected circumstances. Niharika’s experience in theatre makes her an effortless performer.
Muskkaan Jaferi
Muskkaan plays Saira Ali, a hustler who works in the hospitality industry and is often out of money as she is addicted to sports betting and gambling. Saira befriends Bae when the latter is down on her luck and gives the Delhi socialite a reality check. The daughter of veteran comedian Jagdeep, Muskkaan shows her flair for comedic timing as the goofy Saira in Call Me Bae.
Muskkaan has earlier played Madhuri Dixit’s daughter in Fame Game and appeared in the Netflix series Mismatched. She features in Reema Kagti’s Superboys of Malegaon, which is doing the rounds of film festivals across the globe. Muskkaan is also a voiceover artist.
