For Mumtaz Sorcar, December is a month of reflection. “Apart from the festivities, one gets to reflect on the whole year, learn, realise, note down and get ready to grab the new year with new opportunities,” smiles Mumtaz. The final month of the year is showering her with promise and joy since the Hoichoi web series Charitraheen 3 is set to stream soon. Mumtaz is also excited about a song that she has recently sung! A t2 chat...

What are some of your fond December memories?

We all love to celebrate and look for an opportunity to do so. With Christmas in December, of course, we all want to celebrate... and more so for the gifts from Santa. When I was little Santa always came to us with loads of gifts! As a child I would find the magic of Christmas intoxicating and always wondered how Santa would know exactly what I want?! Now the dynamics have changed and Santa comes with not only gifts but with life lessons to become a better person. Earlier as a child I would wait and want Santa to come to me... but now I wish the Three Wise Men came to me!

Who are you in Season 3 of Charitraheen?

Charitraheen 2 was a massive hit. The first season had its own fan following. The second season became so big. I loved my character, a housewife who is married to a doctor. In Season 3, I’m Nirupama only but people will see a whole new Nirupama this season. It’s my first web series so it’s always going to be special.

This was your first shoot after the lockdown...

We are a family of entertainers and we are used to working all the time. After the lockdown, we all slowly got back into the regular pattern, keeping the safety measures, new rules and regulations in mind.

How was your experience of singing the new song?

It felt great! I’ve always loved singing and used to sing a lot during my school and college days. But later didn’t get the opportunity to sing much though I have sung songs along with my sisters for our magic show projects. But last year I got an opportunity to sing professionally and again this year too.

What does listening to music or singing mean to you?

I feel music/singing is like reflecting one’s soul. We connect with so many emotions, so many memories through music. At times it becomes our voice when we cannot speak up/out. Music is a form of magic as it takes over our sense of hearing that connects with the other senses and transports us to a different world. Music/singing is therapeutic too. One would feel happy, lighter if one sings one’s heart out... we hum when we are happy.... One doesn’t have to be an ace singer or a trained singer to be able to sing and let loose. There is joy in singing a song with all the wrong lyrics too!

Tell us about the song?

It’s a very peppy and catchy song, which I sang for the Bengali news channel ABP Ananda. People are sure to keep humming it once they hear it. The lyrics talk about breaking all barriers and overcoming the impossible.

How was it working with music director Savvy?

It was so much fun working with him. He is very calm and composed. Savvy has done music for my films previously but this was the first time he was my music director. He is a silent genius. He knows how to grab people’s attention through music.

What was your first reaction when you got to know that you’ll be singing?

I was already singing mentally... Lol! I did feel the jitters as I’m not really a professional singer who cultures her voice regularly. I love to sing... so I sing... and whoever has heard me sing has happened to like my voice. I’m loving the experience and would love to sing for my films too.

Who are your music inspirations?

There are so many singers I can name... each and everyone is unique and adds that magical element to a song with their X-factor.

Fave singers and bands?

I have many... the list would go on... but yes, I must say that I have extra respect for singers who sing live. To sing live in front of an audience while giving a performance is really difficult and requires a lot of skill other than just having a good voice. I wish to be able to do that one day... where I would sing, dance, act and show magic... all together.
