Disney unveiled the trailer of Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to the popular The Lion King movie, at the D23 expo in California on Saturday. The reveal was preceded by a performance where singers took the stage, offering a glimpse of the film’s opening song I Always Wanted a Brother.

“Experience the epic story of how an orphan became a King. #Mufasa: The Lion King, only in theatres December 20,” Disney wrote on social media, sharing the two-minute-34-second long trailer which offers a glimpse into the evolving relationship between young Mufasa and Scar as they transition from brothers to adversaries.

Mufasa, a prequel to the 2019 live-action reimagining of The Lion King, is directed by Jenkins. The film explores the early life of the future ruler of Pride Rock and his tumultuous relationship with his younger brother, Scar. Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. lend their voices to the young Mufasa (originally voiced by James Earl Jones in the 1994 and 2019 versions) and Scar (previously voiced by Jeremy Irons in 1994 and Chiwetel Ejiofor in 2019).

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter reprises her role as Nala, while her daughter Blue Ivy Carter will voice Kiara, the daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala.

The film also introduces new cast members, including Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki, Preston Nyman as Zazu, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros — a powerful lion with ambitious plans for his pride. It also introduces Thandiwe Newton as Taka’s mother Eshe, Lennie James as Taka’s father Obasi, Anika Noni Rose as Mufasa’s mother Afia, and Keith David as Mufasa’s father Masego.

The 2019 remake, directed by Jon Favreau, grossed an impressive USD 1.66 billion worldwide. Mufasa: The Lion King is set to release in theatres on December 20.
