Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain play two housewives whose soured friendship takes a dark turn in the trailer of Benoît Delhomme’s upcoming psychological thriller Mother’s Instinct.

Dropped by the makers on Tuesday, the two-minute-29-second-long trailer introduces us to Anne’s Céline and Jessica’s Alice, two best friends whose perfect 1960s suburban lives are ripped apart after a shocking accident that kills the former’s little son. The video shows how their sisterly bond gets racked by guilt and paranoia after Anne’s son falls from the balcony in Jessica’s presence.

Taking leaves out of Robert Aldrich’s 1962 film What Ever Happened to Baby Jane and the 1992 horror movie The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, the Mother’s Instinct trailer showcases a woman’s guilt-ridden journey, blended with paranoia, after the death of a loved one.

Adapted from Barbara Abel’s 2023 novel of the same name, Mother’s Instinct also stars Anders Danielsen Lie and Josh Charles. In 2018, a Belgian movie of the same name was released with Veerle Baetens and Anne Coesens as the lead characters.

Mother’s Instinct is French cinematographer Benoît Delhomme’s directorial debut and will hit theatres this year.
