A behind-the-scenes look at Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell shooting a risky car chase scene in Rome from the upcoming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was shared by Paramount Pictures on Wednesday.
In the two-minute-20-second-long video, we see director Christopher McQuarrie along with Cruise and Atwell sharing their experience of shooting the challenging sequence on the busy streets of Rome. Cruise had to drive and drift cars with one hand while being handcuffed to Atwell. At first, the actor was at the wheel of a black SUV but soon they shifted to a tiny yellow Fiat 500.
Sharing the video on Instagram on Wednesday, Cruise admitted that he was never involved in such a frenetic car chase scene. “We’ve done car chases in Mission: Impossible movies before. But nothing like this one,” he wrote in the caption.

“We let the city tell us the kind of chase it was going to be. Traffic in the city is notorious, and the cobblestone streets made all of the driving unpredictable. But the best part was that Tom and Hayley (Atwell) were handcuffed together,” said McQuarrie, breaking down the details of the chase sequence.
The Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One director also said Cruise’s only thought was to not crash with Atwell being handcuffed to him. “While trying to do drifts, every time you think you are going in one direction, the cobblestones on the streets say, ‘No you are not, you are going this way’,” he added.
The seventh and penultimate film of the Mission: Impossible saga also stars Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, Frederick Schmidt, Cary Elwes, Mark Gatiss, Indira Varma and Rob Delaney.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is produced by Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie, while David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Tommy Gormley, Chris Brock and Susan E. Novick serve as executive producers. Written by Christopher McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen, the film is based on the television series by Bruce Geller.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will arrive in the theatres on July 12.
