Miley Cyrus, Jamie Lee Curtis, Harrison Ford, James Cameron and 10 other singers, actors and filmmakers will be honoured as Disney Legends on August 11 at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California, the entertainment company has announced.
“Presenting the 2024 class of Disney Legends! 🎉 See the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony hosted by @RyanSeacrest on Sunday, August 11 at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event,” Disney wrote alongside an image showcasing all the 14 celebrities from film, television, music, animation, imagineering and costume design categories.
The awards ceremony, which is set to open the annual fan event, will be hosted by American television presenter Ryan Seacrest.
Miley shot to fame with Disney’s 2006 teen sitcom Hannah Montana which portrayed her as a teenager living a double life as a pop sensation and an ordinary girl. The series, which premiered in March 2006, garnered over 5 million viewers per episode. Hannah Montana’s success followed the release of its soundtrack in the form of five studio albums, a Billboard Hot 200 record break, the Best of Both Worlds Tour, a concert film and a theatrical film. At age 31, the Wrecking Ball singer is the youngest person to receive the Disney legend title.
Curtis, who won the Oscar for the best supporting actress last year for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, is known for portraying Tess Coleman in the 2003 remake of Freaky Friday opposite Lindsay Lohan and Aunt Vivian ‘Viv’ Ashe in the 2008 comedy film Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
For Disney, Cameron directed Ghosts of the Abyss, Aliens of the Deep, and the Academy Award-winning film Avatar: The Way of Water. A theme park for Avatar was established at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida in 2017. Disney has recently announced that three new sequels of the Avatar franchise will be released in the forthcoming years.
Harrison Ford, best known for playing Han Solo in the original Stars Wars film trilogy and the titular archaeologist in the Indiana Jones franchise, will be honoured with the award for his contributions in the field of films. Both the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises are currently owned by Disney. In 2023, Ford reprised his role as Indiana Jones for the last time in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Other awardees include Harry Potter soundtrack creator John Williams, Black Panther actress Angela Bassett, The Simpsons co-creator James L. Brooks and American puppeteer-filmmaker Frank Oz, known for making the 1974 television show The Muppet Show.
Joe Rohde, Mark Henn, Steve Ditko and Colleen Atwood will receive the award for imagineering, animation, publishing and costume designing, respectively. Kelly Ripa and Martha Blanding are set to win for television performance and parks and resorts creation.
