Alia Bhatt apart, there’s another Indian beauty who set the Met Gala 2024 red carpet abuzz on Monday night — fashion entrepreneur Mona Patel and her bespoke mechanical butterfly corset gown designed by Dutch couturier Iris Van Herpen.

Mona, who grew up in Vadodara and moved to the US to study at Rutgers University, is the founder of a non-profit organisation on fashion entrepreneurship that is aimed at empowering young girls with skills and knowledge.

In a nod to Met Gala 2024’s The Garden of Time dress code, Mona’s ensemble consisted of a nude, floor-length sculpted gown featuring a butterfly-shaped corset and a scalloped train. The highlight was a kinetic arm piece that she wore. The arm accessory, crafted by Casey Curran, was adorned with butterfly wings that opened and closed rhythmically, and attached to the gown with golden cords. The ensemble was curated by American stylist Law Roach, who also styled Zendaya for the event.

“I am beyond honored to be part of the team of stunning @hautemona. The whole team outdid themselves and we are happy to see the internet break,” Mona wrote on Instagram, sharing a video of her walking down the Metropolitan Museum of Art staircase.

Currently based in the US, Mona has launched a variety of initiatives including Couture For Cause, the non-profit organisation that brings together her passion for fashion and philanthropy. She is also the founder of Haute Mindset, a community that empowers women of colour entrepreneurs and leaders. Mona was recognised as a Forbes Next 1000 Honoree and featured on its inaugural list of 250 inspiring entrepreneurs in 2021.
