Adam Driver plays an artist with the power to manipulate time in the trailer of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, dropped by the makers on Saturday.

The Godfather director has described the film as a tribute to his wife Eleanor.

“Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor. I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf,” the Hollywood legend wrote alongside the video.

Opening with a captivating close-up of Adam Driver's visage in sepia tones, the two-minute-17-second trailer transitions to reveal Driver perched atop a towering structure, overlooking a sprawling city bathed in golden sunlight. With a daring step onto the edge, Driver’s character, Cesar Catilina, appears on the brink of a precipice, only to command time itself to halt, granting him a moment of stability.

Described as a “Roman epic fable set in an imagined Modern America,” Megalopolis delves into the conflict brewing within the City of New Rome. At its core is the clash between Driver’s visionary artist, who champions an idealistic future, and mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who staunchly upholds the status quo riddled with greed and partisan strife.

Caught in the crossfire is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), torn between her love for Cesar and her allegiance to her father, Cicero.

Megalopolis, which marks Coppola's directorial comeback after a hiatus of 13 years, will premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17. The ensemble cast of the film includes Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney and Dustin Hoffman.
