High school gets messy for Angourie Rice’s Cady Heron after she falls in love with popular girl group leader Regina George’s ex-boyfriend in the trailer of Mean Girls — a new take on Mark Waters’s 2004 classic teen comedy of the same name.

Dropped by Paramount Pictures on Wednesday, the two-minute-five-second-long trailer introduces Angourie’s introverted Cady who gets welcomed into popular girls group The Plastics, led by Regina (Reneé Rapp). The video shows how Regina helps Cady undergo a makeover and yet feels jealous when the latter falls in love with her ex-boyfriend.

Showcasing iconic moments from the 2004 movie with the new cast, the video includes the scene where Cady comes across Regina’s pink-themed ‘burn book’ in which the latter writes down comments, rumours and insults about her fellow students. It also shows the high school Christmas performance where The Plastics members, including Cady, dance to ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ in revealing Santa outfits, fuelling Regina’s jealousy.

Written by American actress-comedian Tina Fey, Mean Girls also stars Auli’i Cravalho and Jaquel Spivey. Fey reprises her role of a maths teacher from 2004 movie headlined by Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams.

Helmed by Samantha Jayne, Mean Girls is slated to release in theatres on January 15, 2024.
