Regina George is back with her popular girl group, known as the Plastics, to make high school life messy for Angourie Rice’s new student Cady Heron in the final trailer of Tina Fey’s upcoming musical based on her 2017 broadway production.

Dropped by Paramount Pictures on Wednesday, the one-minute-38-second-long trailer introduces Angourie’s shy Cady, who becomes one of the members of The Plastics led by Regina (Reneé Rapp). Cady tries to fit in with the Plastics clique, but things take a turn for the worse when she falls in love with Regina’s ex-boyfriend, making the Plastics queen bee feel betrayed and intent on plotting revenge.

Written by Fey, Mean Girls had originally come out as a movie, starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, in 2004. In 2017, Fey turned the movie into a Broadway musical, which also starred Rapp as Regina. The upcoming movie, yet another project undertaken by the veteran screenwriter, is a musical adapted from the Broadway version of the classic teen comedy.

The new trailer, which sees Fey reprising her role as a maths teacher from the 2004 movie, also gives a nod to several familiar scenes from the original film. These include the Plastics’ Christmas dance performance of ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ in revealing Santa outfits.

Directed by Samantha Jayne, the Mean Girls remake, also featuring Auli’i Cravalho and Jaquel Spivey, is slated to release in theatres on January 15.
