Mariah Carey’s mother Patricia and sister Alison passed away on the same day last weekend, leaving the pop singer heartbroken, she said in a statement.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the 55-year-old singer said. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” she added.
Details regarding Patricia and Alison’s death have not been revealed yet.
Patricia, a trained opera singer and vocal coach, was married to Alfred Roy Carey. Together, they became parents to three children: Alison, Mariah and Morgan. The couple, however, got divorced in 1973.
Last year, Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You topped Billboard’s Hot 100 for two consecutive weeks and broke Spotify’s all-time record of most streams in a single day on Christmas eve.
Carey had shared the news with her fans alongside pictures from her Christmas celebrations. “Wow!! Woke up this morning to the incredible news of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” breaking the Spotify record and being #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 & the Global 200 charts,” she had written on X.
All I Want for Christmas Is You, the lead single from Carey’s fourth studio album Merry Christmas (1994), went on to become a Christmas standard. It has put the 54-year-old singer on top of Billboard Hot 100 for a record 93th week, counting the latest weeks. On Spotify, the song has been played for over 17.7 million times, shattering the music streamer’s all-time record of most streams in a day.
