Filmmaker Greta Gerwig’s 2023 blockbuster Barbie may not get a sequel, the movie’s lead star and producer Margot Robbie has told AP Entertainment in an interview.

“I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy,” Margot said, adding how Greta put “everything” into the movie and that the actress cannot imagine a sequel to the original film.

“I’d say the biggest takeaway for me is that original films can still hit huge at the box office. It doesn’t have to be a sequel or a prequel or a remake,” the 33-year-old actress-producer said.

“And just because there’s a female lead doesn’t mean it won’t hit all four quadrants which is a misconception that a lot of people still have,” she said talking about breaking stereotypes regarding female-led films.

“So, it’s really important that Barbie did well. As much as it’s nice, it’s also important that it does well so people can also, in the future, have big, original ideas and be given the budget to execute them properly,” she added.

Barbie, also starring Ryan Gosling, has collected over USD 1.4 billion globally at the box office, emerging as Warner Bros.' most successful domestic release ever after Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight.
