Vijay Sethupathi is an ordinary barber on a mission to get his “Lakshmi” back from Anurag Kashyap’s menacing antagonist in the first trailer of Maharaja, dropped by the makers on Thursday.

The one-minute-43-second-long trailer introduces Vijay’s character as Maharaja, an ordinary barber from K.K Nagar. He looks troubled while lodging a complaint with the police about someone breaking into his house and stealing his “Lakshmi”. However, after several enquiries, the police come to know that Vijay’s stolen “Lakshmi” is not gold, money or valuable articles.

After filing an FIR, Vijay makes several gestures to give a hint to the police about what “Lakshmi” might be. But no one understands him. He is even thrown out of the police station.

The subsequent scenes show goons preparing themselves for a fight while the police get to know that Maharaja is hiding a secret about something major that happened in his house on the night of the robbery.

At the end of the trailer, we get a glimpse of Anurag turning around to face Vijay. His eyes ooze menace as he smiles wickedly.

Maharaja also stars Mamta Mohandas, Bharathiraja, Natarajan Subramaniam, Abhirami, Singampuli and Kalki. The film is directed by Nithilan Saminathan and produced by Sudhan Sundaram and Jagadish Palanisamy. Ajaneesh Loknath has served as the film’s music composer.

The release date for Maharaja is yet to be announced.
