Dakota Johnson makes her MCU debut as clairvoyant paramedic Cassandra Webb, a Manhattan woman exploring her new-found powers and navigating through a series of life-threatening events involving a Spider-Man-like assassin, in the trailer of Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment’s upcoming Spider-Man spin-off Madame Web.
Dropped on Wednesday, the two-minute-55-second-long trailer offers a glimpse into Madame Web’s origin story, showing how a near-fatal car accident rendered superpowers to an ordinary woman. Baffled by her visions of the future and attacks by the assassin, referred to as the Spider-people hunter, Dakota’s Cassandra teams up with three gifted girls who face similar threats.
The video begins with montages of action-packed scenes featuring Dakota and Sydney Sweeney as they face-off against the mysterious assassin. Getting stabbed by the Spider-people hunter in her vision makes Cassandra realise for the first time that she can see future threats.
The antagonist of this Spider-Man spin-off is Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) who appears in a black Spider-Man-like suit and is determined to hunt down all other people with Spider-centric powers after having received his powers from an ancient Spider totem.
Alongside Dakota and Sweeney, Madame Web will feature Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin and Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, who are part of Cassandra’s Spider-woman trio. Directed by S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web is a Spider-Man spin-off based on a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. The makers are yet to announce the release date of the film.
