Idris Elba is back as the brilliant but emotionally troubled detective chief inspector (DCI) John Luther in Netflix’s film adaptation of the popular BBC crime thriller series Luther, which concluded in 2019 after five seasons.

The trailer of Luther: The Fallen Sun, which was dropped by Netflix on Tuesday late evening, picks up threads from the last episode of the last season of the BBC show. Luther has been put behind bars for skirting rules and regulations to catch criminals. But he decides to break out of prison to stop a sadistic serial killer, David Robey (played by Andy Serkis), who has been terrorising London.

Beginning with a scene in which Luther is seen inciting a prison riot, the two-minute-13-second trailer promises a gritty cat-and-mouse chase with the Joker-esque villain. The clip is reminiscent of Skyfall — the 23rd film of the James Bond franchise — as it moves from snowy landscapes to the neon-lit criminal underbelly of London.

Directed by Jamie Payne, Luther: The Fallen Sun is written by Neil Cross, who is also the creator of the original show. Apart from Alba and Serkis, the movie also stars Cynthia Erivo and Dermot Crowley.

Premiered in 2010, BBC’s Luther followed obsessive, possessed, violent but extremely gifted detective chief inspector John Luther, who is dealing with a failed marriage and anger issues. He could not arrest psychopathic murderer Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson) due to lack of evidence and strike up a friendship with her. They end up solving various cases together.

Luther: The Fallen Sun will be available to see in select cinemas for one week from February 24 before its Netflix arrival on March 10.

2022’s Disney+Hotstar series Rudra: The Edge of Darkness, starring Ajay Devgn in the titular role, is the official Indian remake of Luther.
