Finding love, losing it and finding it again is a rollercoaster ride that brings excitement to romantic dramas. Falling in love with a stranger on a plane. Meeting that someone who encourages you to be a better version of yourself. Having someone stand beside you through your toughest times. These are the tropes that are embodied in a number of romantic movies available on Netflix.

Here are three must-watch romantic dramas on Netflix that are all about love in unusual places and the bond with family.

Love At First Sight

Serendipitous meetings and leaps of faith are what the Jamila Jamil-starrer Love At First Sight is all about, based on Jennifer E. Smith’s 2011 novel The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight.

Hadley Sullivan’s (Haley Lu Richardson) path crosses with Oliver Jones’s (Ben Hardy) after she misses her flight to London and her phone dies. Borrowing a charger from Oliver, her fellow passenger, Hadley starts chatting with him. Over dinner Hadley tells Oliver that she is going to London to attend her father’s wedding. She assumed that Oliver, a British student studying statistics at Yale, is travelling for a wedding as well. They feel drawn to each other but are separated after boarding the flight. By a stroke of luck, Oliver is upgraded to the empty business class seat next to Hadley.

Oliver gives his number to Hadley before parting but she loses it accidentally after dropping her phone. At the wedding, Hadley overhears guests discussing a funeral and she realises that Oliver was in London to attend a funeral, not a wedding. Hadley takes a leap of faith and decides to go find Oliver. She discovers Oliver’s quirky family is hosting a memorial for his mother who has terminal cancer. The two meet but there’s an argument, making Hadley leave in a huff. This time Oliver takes a leap of faith and shows up at the wedding reception to patch things up with Hadley.

In the Vanessa Caswill-directed romance, Jamila Jamil plays the role of the omnipresent narrator, often nudging Hadley and Oliver in the right direction.

Forgotten Love

The Michal Gazda-directed Polish romantic drama is an adaptation of the 1937 novel Znachor by Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz. Released on September 27 on Netflix, the story deals with romantic as well as parental love.

Leszek Lichota plays doctor and doting father Rafał Wilczur. The acclaimed and philanthropic doctor’s life takes an unsettling turn when his wife runs away with her lover, taking their toddler daughter with her. Depressed and drunk, Rafal ends up being mugged and consequently loses his memory. Presumed dead, the father continues his search for his daughter but does not remember what he is looking for.

After years of his search his path crosses that of his adult daughter Marysia (Maria Kowalska) who is working as a barmaid in the small town where he wanders into. He also meets a widowed farm owner, Zoska (Anna Szymanczyk), who takes him in. Rafal, who has been calling himself Antoni Kosiba since his amnesia, medically treats the local people. He saves Marysia’s life when she gets into a near-fatal accident.

Thought to be practising medicine without a licence, he gets into trouble with the law. Marysia eventually finds out that Rafal is her biological father whom she was separated from. Her acknowledgement of her father helps him regain his memory, end his search and reveal his identity, sparing him from prison.

Love Is In The Air

Directed by Adrian Powers, the romantic comedy Love Is In The Air shows how love can change the way you see the world. Streaming on Netflix from September 28, the movie follows the fiercely independent pilot Dana Randall, played by Delta Goodrem, as she slowly falls in love with William Mitchell played by Joshua Sasse.

Dana operates her family’s small airline Fullerton Airways that runs local flights for tourists and locals in Australia. The struggling airline is about to be shut down by William, who has been sent from London by his father’s company ITCM Financial. He initially sends a bad report suggesting that the airline be shut down. However, Dana shows him the importance the airline has for the local company.

The budding romance between the two grinds to a standstill when Dana realises that William was behind the airline being shut down. Despite William trying to stop his father from writing off the business, all hope seems lost. Dana takes matters into her own hands and attends a board meeting in London, convincing the financial company to help expand Fullerton Airways. William quits working for his father. He joins Dana in Australia to aid the expansion and grow their relationship.
