Rajat Kapoor plays a cargo ship captain whose life takes a thrilling turn after Somali pirates attack his crew in the trailer of Disney+ Hotstar’s upcoming series Lootere, the directorial debut of Hansal Mehta’s son Jai Mehta.
Dropped by the streamer on Wednesday, the two-minute-11-second-long trailer begins with Rajat scanning the sea and spotting pirate skiffs approaching their vessel. The pirates, who infest the waters of Somalia, grab a hold of the ship in no time and take the navy officers hostage. The situation escalates further when they negotiate ransom deals with Rajat.
Vivek Gomber plays Vikrant Gandhi, the greedy president of the Mogadishu Port Authority who enters the scene with an ulterior motive behind the ransom deals. He convinces the pirate captain to negotiate with the Indian government for USD 50 million as a price for the hostages.
The trailer also includes a brief hilarious moment between Rajat and one of the pirates who asks the former whether he knows Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar since he is from India. From the first-look, it seems that the series will have a similar tone to that of Tom Hanks’s 2013 film Captain Phillips.
Sharing the trailer on Instagram, Hansal wrote, “Proud father presents a son’s labour of love…All Hands on Deck! #HotstarSpecials #Lootere official trailer.”
Jai had previously collaborated with his father on the latter’s hit series Scam 1992 in 2020. Also starring Amruta Khanvilkar and Aamir Ali, Lootere is slated to premiere on Disney+ Hotstar on March 22.
