HBO, in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, has greenlit James Gunn’s long-awaited Green Lantern TV series, the studio announced on Tuesday.
“Excited to announce the official greenlight for DC Studios Lanterns an HBO original release,” Gunn posted on Instagram alongside a poster featuring the Green Lantern characters.
Titled Lanterns, the eight-episode series will be based on the iconic DC title. It will stream exclusively on Max and air on HBO. This move aligns Lanterns with other major shows like the Harry Potter TV series and the It prequel Welcome to Derry, which will also be available on both platforms.
The live-action cosmic adventure will be adapted by Damon Lindelof of Watchmen, Chris Mundy of Ozark, and renowned DC Comics writer Tom King. James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of the DCU, will serve as producers for the series.
The storyline follows John Stewart, a new recruit to the DC Universe’s Green Lanterns, as he is guided by the experienced hero Hal Jordan. The casting for the series has not yet been disclosed.
“We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s ‘Green Lantern’. As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live action series will mark an exciting new era,” Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content, said in a statement.
“We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and LANTERNS brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman’,” James Gunn and Peter Safran, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of DC Studios, said in a joint statement.
The rebranded and revamped DCU under Gunn and Safran will officially begin with David Corenswet's Superman movie in 2025.
