Inside jokes, pun and interesting revelations about the previous episodes made the finale of Koffee With Karan Season 7 the most entertaining episode this season. With comedians Tanmay Bhat, Kusha Kapila, Niharika NM and Danish Sait joining filmmaker Karan Johar on the couch, viewers were in for a laughter riot.
The funny four turned the tables on Karan, grilling him and making him spill the beans this time around. What followed was a mini roast of Karan. An interesting change in the format gave us flashbacks of the season, with the influencers choosing the Koffee Award winners. Here are the highlights from the unmissable finale and the list of award winners.
Karan’s Alia Bhatt obsession and partiality towards Janhvi Kapoor
Karan revealed that Alia Bhatt asked him to stop taking her name on the show after he was accused of mentioning her too frequently.
Danish joked that Karan uttered Alia’s name on the show as many times as Alia said “Shiva” in the film Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva — an observation that has become a meme-worthy joke since the film’s release.
“A lot of times, her (Alia) name is also mentioned because you want to know who is the top actress in the country. And we know the name you want to hear,” Kusha said.
To which Karan admitted, “No, I really think it’s Alia Bhatt.”
Another criticism that Karan addressed was his apparent partiality towards Janhvi Kapoor over Sara Ali Khan in Episode 2. He revealed that during the rapid fire round, there had been a miscalculation leading them to declare Janhvi as the winner. A previously unaired clip showed Janhvi, after being declared the winner, saying, “This is the best day of my life!” But the real result showed Sara as the winner. Karan felt guilty and started to overcompensate by praising Janhvi, he confessed.
Karan’s wedding FOMO
In several episodes, Karan brought up the topic of not being invited to Vicky Kaushal and Katrina Kaif’s wedding after he credited his couch for ‘manifesting’ their relationship.
He said that during Vicky and Katrina’s wedding, people assumed that he was invited and was keeping it a secret. “First it was like ‘we know you’re there’ and then I had to deal with a plethora of ‘dude why weren’t you invited?’…I felt like I really went through two turbulent days,” Karan said.
He admitted that he “took a lot of solace” in the fact that Anurag Kashyap, who essentially launched Vicky, was not invited to the wedding either.
Tanmay guesses who Karan was dating
In Episode 11, when Varun Dhawan and Anil Kapoor occupied the couch as guests, Karan mentioned ending a romantic relationship that the Badlapur actor supported.
“Varun Dhawan actually was one of the few people who knew and he found out by default,” Karan told the four influencers. Tanmay was quick to drop a “You’re dating David Dhawan?” as a cheeky remark, which made Karan go red.
Later in the episode, Karan also got a message from Dhawan, which said, “Koffee With Karan with Anil-Varun is the best. Outstanding.”
Dhawan’s message became fodder for more jokes on Karan’s past relationship. “Just say ‘I love you. See you tonight.’ Just say it and end the conversation,” Tanmay said soon after Dhawan’s message to Karan. Niharika asked if Dhawan’s contact is saved as “Baby with a baby emoji and a heart” in Karan’s phone.
Koffee Award winners of Season 7
Karan showed clips from the season for various categories and the four influencers got to vote for the winners.
Sonam Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor from Episode 6 won the Best Moment for Sonam’s remark on Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva being named ‘Shiva No 1’.
Ranveer Singh won the Best Rapid Fire for his unabashed answers during Episode 1’s rapid fire round.
Episode 1 with Ranveer and Alia was also voted as the Best Episode of Season 7.
For showing his vulnerable side, Arjun Kapoor was voted as the winner of Best Performance: Male.
All four judges decided to vote for Samantha Ruth Prabhu for her Episode 3 appearance as the winner of Best Performance: Female.
Season 8 in the making
Season 7 was by far the shortest Koffee With Karan season, with the previous seasons offering at least 20 episodes. Karan revealed before the season’s end that Disney+ Hotstar has already renewed Season 8 of the show and it will stream in 2023.
