Anil Kapoor and Varun Dhawan gave a lively feel to Episode 11 of Koffee With Karan Season 7, steering away from controversy-triggering remarks and revelations. The new episode, streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from September 15, instead explored the vulnerable side of the Jugjugg Jeeyo co-stars. Here’s what makes it worth a watch.
Anil and Varun’s honesty about their career insecurities
Unlike other guests on the show, Anil and Varun opened up about their professional insecurities. Discussing how he felt about nepotism, Anil rewinded to his struggling years. “When I started my career, there was Sunny (Deol), there was Sanju (Sanjay Dutt). Jackie (Shroff) was an outsider but he still got his first break from Subhash Ghai. So, he himself became an ‘A-lister’ just with that one announcement… I was doing bit roles. I was doing South Indian films,” said Anil, adding that it made him question why he was not getting the big roles. He confessed he felt insecure about his place in the industry till “the day I signed Yash Chopra’s film”.
Karan asked Varun if it bothered him when an actor like Ranveer Singh is signed for a Karan Johar film instead of him. “It definitely makes me think, have I not had that body of work for Karan not to again come to me with this film?” said Varun.
Varun’s biggest competition — Alia Bhatt
“The only person I feel very healthily competitive with, and have since the beginning of my career, is Alia (Bhatt),” admitted Varun. “As a society we have to start accepting that our female leads are also heroes or bigger than heroes,” he added, when Karan said that naming Alia as his biggest competition was “unique”.
Marriage advice and what makes Anil feel younger
Varun gave a long monologue on how his wife, Natasha Dalal, is “the best thing” to have happened to him. “This is one of the lessons I’ve taught him,” boasted Anil, “You’ve to praise your wife, you’ve to say how happy you are and how your wife makes you happy and all that.” Anil, who has been married to Sunita Bhavnani since 1984, spoke about his marriage and was rife with nuptial advice.
We saw a super energetic side of Anil on the show. The 65-year-old actor outstripped the younger actor’s energy, dropping to his knees and getting step after step right in the dance segment of the show. The secret of how Anil remained so youthful was answered by the veteran actor in the rapid fire round. It was “sex, sex and sex”, he said.
Karan’s break-up confession
Karan asked Varun and Anil to share their opinion on the topic of infidelity, the primary theme in the film Jugjugg Jeeyo. Varun turned the tables by asking Karan why he was drawn to the theme of infidelity. He questioned if Karan’s films, like Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, were inspired by his knowledge of “a lot of people cheating on their marriages”.
Karan remained tight-lipped when Anil and Varun asked him to list the stars he knew were cheating on their partners. However, Varun finally pried a confession out of Karan on this topic. Karan revealed that he had been in a relationship, which Varun was very supportive of, but the relationship had ended and so he did not have anyone to cheat on.
