Hollywood actress Kate Winslet has dedicated her first BAFTA win to her daughter and I Am Ruth co-star Mia Threapleton, expressing the wish to share half of the trophy with the 22-year-old.

“If I could cut this in half, I would give the other half to my daughter, Mia Threapleton. We did this together, kiddo,” Winslet said in her acceptance speech at the awards ceremony held at the Royal Festival Hall in London on May 14.

The 2023 BAFTA TV Awards saw the mother-daughter duo show up in matching ensembles. Winslet wore an asymmetrical black dress, while Mia opted for a halterneck jumpsuit with a nude waist detail. Matching messy buns and statement earrings completed the look.

Winslet won a BAFTA in the leading actress category for her role in I Am Ruth, the feature-length instalment of the female-led drama anthology series I Am. The Dominic Savage-directed drama tells the story of a mother who gets increasingly concerned watching her teenage daughter, Freya (Mia Threapleton), get consumed by social media.

“To people in power and to people who can make a change, please criminalise harmful content. Please eradicate harmful content. We don't want it. We want our children back. We don't want to lie awake terrified for our children's mental health,” Winslet said in her acceptance speech.

The 47-year-old continued, “I Am Ruth was made for parents and their children — for families who feel that they are held hostage by the perils of the online world, for parents who wish they could communicate with their teenagers but who no longer can, and for young people who have become addicted to social media and its darker sides.”

After her win, Winslet was seemingly nervous. “You would think that I had a system that worked for keeping your heart from racing and thumping in your mouth and feeling like you're going to actually be sick all down yourself.”

When asked about her experience working with her daughter, the Titanic star was all smiles. “She's much more powerful and brave than I was at her age.”

Winslet shares her daughter with her ex-husband, Extraordinary Rendition (2007) director Jim Threapleton. The couple were married from 1998 to 2001 and had Mia in 2000.
