Kartik Aaryan’s Chandu Champion falls short of Rs 40-crore mark at the end of Week 1 in theatres

The Kabir Khan-helmed sports drama is facing competition from horror comedy film Munjya, which has crossed the Rs 70-crore mark at the box office

Kabir Khan’s sports drama Chandu Champion, Starring Kartik Aaryan in the titular role, ended its first week of theatrical run by minting Rs 39.62 crore nett at the domestic box office, trade figures revealed.

After a lukewarm response on the opening day, the sports drama experienced a significant boost at the box office on its first weekend and remained stable during the weekdays. According to trade figures, Chandu Champion debuted on June 14 with Day 1 earnings of Rs 5.4 crore nett and collected Rs 7.7 crore nett on Saturday. On Sunday, the sports drama minted another Rs 11 crore nett.

On Monday, which was a public holiday because of Eid-ul-Azha, the movie raked in Rs 6.01 crore nett, followed by Rs 3.60 crore nett on Tuesday and Rs 3.40 crore nett on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Kartik Aaryan-starrer added another Rs 2.5 crore nett to its kitty, as per early estimates, taking the film’s total Week 1 earnings to Rs 39.62 crore nett.

Also starring Vijay Raaz, Brijendra Kala, Rajpal Yadav and Bhuvan Arora, Chandu Champion is a biographical sports drama based on the life of Murlikant Petkar, who won an individual gold medal in the 1972 Summer Paralympics.

Currently, Chandu Champion is competing with Munjya, which has surpassed the Rs 70-crore mark domestically at the end of its second week in theatres.

Headlined by Abhay Verma and Sharvari Wagh, the horror comedy film had a fantastic first week at the domestic box office, minting Rs 36.5 crore nett. On its second Friday, the Aditya Sarpotdar-helmed movie raked in Rs 3.75 crore nett. This was followed by a collection of Rs 15.5 crore nett over the weekend.

The horror comedy film minted Rs 15.25 crore nett during the weekdays, taking the film’s total collection so far to Rs 71 crore nett.
