Almost 30 per cent of Kalki 2898 AD’s set was built instead of using green rooms, the makers of the futuristic sci-fi film said in a new behind-the-scenes video decoding the VFX process for the Prabhas-starrer.

“We didn’t want everything to be just green screen. We built like 30-35 per cent of this set. Something like the Shambala fight with bot and all, it’s insane,” producer Priyanka Dutt said in the video shared by media service and animation company Prime Focus India.

“Something like this we have never seen in India. People are comparing it to Hollywood,” she Priyanka added, speaking about how the film has revolutionised Indian sci-fi films. “People are talking excellent stuff about VFX. They are saying it’s a visual wonder,” added Priyanka’s co-producer Swapna Dutt.

Director Nag Ashwin also features in the video. He encouraged viewers to watch the film in 3D, calling the experience “special”. “To be able to experience it in this format (3D) is very special,” Ashwin said.

“There is a lot of FX-heavy work, a lot of assets, a lot of vehicles…a lot of digital doubles of armies. All of them fighting each other. The whole team at Redefine, I have to really thank them because they’ll always go back and push for the best quality and I’m so happy that now the whole country is talking about the VFX in the film,” he added.

Directed by Nag Ashwin, Kalki 2898 AD stars Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Kamal Haasan in key roles. Santhosh Narayanan serves as the music composer of the film, while the cinematography is done by Djordje Stojiljkovic.

Kalki 2898 AD revolves around the immortal warrior Ashwatthama, played by Amitabh Bachchan, going to great lengths to protect Deepika Padukone’s Sumathi who is pregnant with Kalki, the prophesied tenth and final incarnation of Vishnu.

Also starring Disha Patani, Saswata Chatterjee and Brahmanandam, Kalki 2898 AD hit theatres on June 27.
