Lionsgate Films are planning for the return of Keanu Reeves as John Wick in the fifth instalment of the action franchise following the resounding success of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Joe Drake has said.
The recently released John Wick: Chapter 4 was widely expected to be the final instalment in the action franchise.
In a recent interview with American entertainment magazine The Hollywood Reporter, Drake said that a John Wick 5 is no longer out of the question even though Reeves’ character seemingly meets his demise at the end of Chapter 4.
“There’s a will and there’s an openness. And you could certainly interpret that ending in different ways,” said Drake. “We’re all going to take a tiny rest here and then scratch at ideas about whether there’s a credible way to get into five. But there’s no guarantee,” he added.
“Keanu and Chad, rightly so, are very protective about never screwing with the audience. So we certainly have our work cut out for us. Keanu is so beloved and that character is so beloved; that’s not lost on him,” Drake further said.
Directed by Chad Stahelski, John Wick revolutionized action films with its neo-noir gun-fu action set pieces. John Wick: Chapter 4 debuted with a collection of $141.4 million at the worldwide box office, a series record.
John Wick is an American action thriller media franchise created by Derek Kolstad and centred around John Wick, a former hitman who is forced back into the criminal underworld he had previously abandoned.
The franchise began with the release of John Wick in 2014, followed by three sequels — Chapter 2 in 2017, Chapter 3 – Parabellum in 2019, and Chapter 4 in 2023.
Two other spin-offs — the limited series The Continental and the film Ballerina — are also in development.
Apart from Reeves, Chapter 4 also featured Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Lance Reddick, Rina Sawayama, Scott Adkins and Ian McShane.
