Sheiladitya Moulik’s latest film Surjo traces the journey of its principal characters towards self-discovery. It is a story full of love and heartbreak, laughter and tears, action and intrigue, offering all-round entertainment to the audience.
Jodi mele dhoro rode contains in itself the philosophy of life expressed in Surjo. Jodi mele dhoro rode is about embracing life’s experiences and looking forward to the future eagerly. It encourages one to put aside the past and nurture happy thoughts and dream beautiful dreams, for only then can they come true. The music video offers glimpses into the past of the three main characters. Uma (Madhumita Sarcar) feels confined and under stress; she quits her job and goes away to a new place, and then again sets off on a new journey to look for someone. Diya (Darshana Banik) is a love-lorn young woman. It seems as though the light has gone out of her life. Like Uma, she too is searching for somebody. Surjo appears in her life like a ray of sunshine, a dependable person who restores hope in her heart.
The chaotic collection of scenes in the song, mostly from the characters’ past, shows that each character has a unique backstory from which they are either escaping, or which guides their current purpose in life. Uma tries to shake off the baggage of the past and is excited about starting life afresh. The song celebrates her spirit of curiosity and adventure. However, Diya hangs on to memories of her past, which make life more painful for her. Just like the shawl she clutches around her, she too is wrapped in her unhappy memories. The women’s journeys are set against that of Surjo (Vikram Chatterjee), who is depicted as a free, joyful spirit. Surjo symbolises the vibrant dynamism of youth. Like the sun, he fills the lives of those around him with brightness and energy.
The picturesque scenes of lush, gorgeous, rural landscape add to the beauty of the song though an air of mystery continues to pervade about the identity of the nameless faces that Uma finds sketched in a notebook.
Through its lyrics, Jodi mele dhoro rode spreads a message of optimism that the clouds will clear and the sun will envelop the world again with its light and warmth.
