Joaquin Phoenix is back as Joker, this time joined by Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn, in the latest trailer for Warner Bros. and DC’s Joker: Folie A Deux, promising a riot of psychotic laughter and madness in the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 anti-hero blockbuster.

Slated to hit theatres on October 4, following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August, Joker 2 sees Todd Phillips serving a variety of roles in the background, besides donning the director’s hat. He co-wrote the script with Scott Silver and produced the movie with Emma Tillinger Koskoff and Joseph Garner.

The two-minute-50-second trailer of Joker: Folie A Deux continues the story of Arthur Fleck, who is now incarcerated at Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his actions as Joker. Despite his criminal acts, he is deemed a hero by a section of the public. While Arthur grapples with the two conflicting personalities within him, he is captivated by his co-prisoner Harley Quinn. As Frank Sinatra’s music sets the scene, Joker and Harley stir up chaos with their actions.

Before dropping the trailer on Tuesday, the makers ran a 24-hour livestream featuring an empty TV studio as part of promotions, promising a “Joker & Harley Show”.

The original Joker film was a monumental success. It won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2019, received 11 Oscar nominations, secured Phoenix a Best Actor Oscar and helped Hildur Gudnadottir take home the Academy Award for Original Score. It also became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time with a worldwide collection of USD 1.07 billion.

Apart from Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Joker 2 also features Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey in key roles.
