“Any of us can go at any minute” — Jeremy Renner’s near-fatal snowplow accident earlier this year left his The Avengers co-star Chris Hemsworth thinking a lot about death and the impermanence of life, the 39-year-old actor has revealed in an interview with the English magazine GQ UK.
“None of us really knew how serious it was. I think anything like that, it’s an immediate realisation of ‘Wow, any of us can go at any minute…’,” he said.
The accident, which left Renner bedridden with 30 broken bones, stunned all his Avengers co-stars, prompting a “text chain” in their group, Hemsworth said. “We were all on our ‘Avengers’ text chain, we were all chatting. And it was wild.”
Renner was run over by a snowcat vehicle on January 1 in an attempt to save his nephew. He had to be rushed to a hospital in an air ambulance, with no certainty on whether the Hawkeye actor would survive or not.
“We’re getting to the age now where we’re going to start losing people we love,” Hemsworth said, opening up about his thoughts on death as he approaches his 40s.
During Renner's recovery period, the Avengers group text took on a lighter tone, with the members playfully teasing him. The group includes Hemsworth, Renner, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson, all of whom were part of the 2012 blockbuster The Avengers.
Johansson, Evans, and Evangeline Lilly visited Renner at his home during his recovery.
Renner has made significant progress in his recovery, regaining much of his mobility and attending the world premiere of his Disney+ series Rennervations in April.
Approaching his 40th birthday in August, Hemsworth admitted his reluctance to embrace this milestone in the interview.
“I don’t think I wanna turn 40,” Hemsworth said. “I still feel like I’m 25 and I’ve got heaps of time. Now I’m like, ‘Oh, I could be halfway. More than halfway’… The reality of ‘I’m not going to be here forever’ is sinking in.”
