⦾ As the opening credits roll, Jeet as Rahul is seen on a bike zooming off to Midnapore in search of his love (Nandini, a doctor, played by Koel Mallick). He wants to clear a few misunderstandings. His fast and furious ride on the highway is framed from various angles and gives the Raj Chakraborty film its energy and momentum.
⦾ As the credits end, Dev as Shibu appears on the scene, on a beat-up moped, singing his own superhit song Poran jaye joliya re. Jeet’s intensity and serious demeanour is complemented by Dev’s innocence, enthusiasm, wit, sense of humour and gift of the gab. Shibu is a thief with a heart of gold who is always on the lookout for a bike to grab and a spot of humour in mundane situations.
⦾ The two heroes do not meet immediately! To tease the audience a bit, a scene has Rahul vrooming past Shibu who is taken aback by the fancy bike! “Poranta jaliye diye gelo re bhai... it must be a Japanese bike that has come out recently. Only superstars ride them,” he exclaims. That bike raises his curiosity level; he hatches a plan to steal the bike and immediately speeds away with someone else’s bike whom he had met minutes ago!
⦾ The scenes of the two superstars on their bikes vrooming down the highway are a treat! Rahul is no-nonsense, focused while Shibu is his usual, jocular self, waving to people on buses or secretly admiring Rahul’s fancy bike! Their journey is full of fun episodes, like when they stop to ask a man the direction. Seeing the brooding Rahul, he asks, ”Are you coming from the police station?” to which Shibu replies, “No! From the lock-up!” When they pick up two kids and ferry them to a school, Shibu asks them, “Have you seen Poran Jaye Joliya Re? Did you like it?” They loved it!
⦾ The lovey-dovey scene in a cafe where the charming Rahul, smitten by Nandini, extends his “hand of friendship” to the surprised doctor! “Do you believe in love at first sight? Or maybe love at second sight? I love you Nandini. You don’t have to say anything now”.
⦾ Another romantic scene has Rahul insisting that Nandini share her feelings of love with him. Nandini comes up with a solution! “Don’t you understand how much I love you?” he asks to which she says, “Don’t you have anything else to say?” “Tell me that you love me, please,” he pleads. Then Nandini gives him a tongue twister and asks him to repeat after her —“Bhalobasha bhalo bashey shudhui takey, bhalobeshey bhalobashay bedhe je rakhe!” Rahul is stumped.
⦾ The birthday party sequence that starts with all the best intentions but ends up horribly for Nandini, who was invited to attend Rahul’s lavish birthday party. She is insulted by Rahul’s friend and eventually figures out that she is the object of pity for Rahul. He may think that he loves her but he fails to truly understand her as the person she is. Their worlds are completely different. An argument leads to a meltdown which leads to a car crash and Nandini disappearing from his life.
⦾ Kharaj Mukherjee impresses in a cameo. He brings on the laughs and finally wraps up on an emotional note that brings a lump to your throat.
⦾ Rahul takes the injured Shibu to a medical camp where Shibu has us in splits
as he desperately tries to wiggle his way out from getting an injection! That’s when Shibu meets doctor Nandini for the first time, though Rahul, who is waiting outside, has no clue that Nandini is inside looking after his friend.
⦾ Even as their friendship grows and emotional moments underscore their bond, the laughs keep on flowing. Shibu says that he loves Rahul’s style, his shades, the way he speaks, and salutes his search for his love.... and then ends his observations with a quip... that he loves Rahul’s smile, which reminds him of the chomchoms from a sweet shop!
⦾ The message of the road film hits home when Rahul tells his rich father that he has understood the value of life by going on the road. Life is not just about the self; it is about sharing.
In his quest for Nandini, he has found himself. The poignant moment is once again leavened by humour. Rahul’s dad tells Shibu to look after Rahul, in English. Shibu nods merrily but later asks Rahul what was his dad telling him?! To mark a new chapter of their friendship, Rahul behaves like Shibu by wearing his bandanna and talking like him while Shibu acts like Rahul by sporting his sunglasses!
⦾ The climax where Rahul finally manages to spot Nandini at a train station. At first he runs past her but then stops, and turns around. Nandini sees him and looks up. Rahul breaks down and tells her how he has changed as a person. “Life means trust, sacrifice and humanity,” he tells an emotional Nandini. He asks for forgiveness and says, “I have come all the way to tell you one thing.... Bhalobasha bhalo bashey shudhui takey, bhalobeshey bhalobashay bedhe je rakhe.”
