Actress Janhvi Kapoor underwent two years of rigorous cricket training and braved a severe shoulder injury while preparing for her role in upcoming sports drama Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, the film’s director Sharan Sharma said in a new video shared by makers Dharma Productions on Friday.
“So we discovered that she has something called MDI, which is multidirectional instability, So now within a span of two months she has kind of torn her ligaments. in left and right shoulder,” said Sharan.
“And now we land up in a spot we are like okay, how do we make this film. She loves pushing. I don't know what fetish she has got with pushing herself to the limit, but she loves pushing herself to the tilt...I genuinely don't know how she kind of pushed through the pain barrier and gave her five thousand percent, through the training, through the shoot. She gave the film something that I don't think most actors would be able to commit that much,” Sharan added.
The video begins with Janhvi shedding light on the training she had to undergo to portray the character of Mahima, a doctor who is also interested in cricket. Her husband Mahendra (Rajkummar Rao) spots her cricketing talent and encourages her to pursue her dreams in the film.
The 27-year-old actress goes on to admit that the role of a cricketer turned out to be extremely challenging. “I'm the most unathletic, non-sporty person on the planet,” says Janhvi, elaborating on the difficulties she faced during her training.
The video also features Abhishek Nayar and Vikrant Yeligeti, Janhvi’s coaches. Abhishek talks about their trip to Baroda where Janhvi studied the body language of international crickets, adding “It was as rigorous as anyone would have when they were preparing for an IPL, if not more.”
Interposed with clips from their training, the video reveals the injury Janhvi underwent on account of multidirectional instability (MDI), a condition in which there is increased looseness of the supporting ligaments that surround the shoulder's glenohumeral joint.
“So the first injury happened because of an inside out. The second happened when I was doing the switch hit...And I was just in shock. I was like, this cannot happen again,” recollects Janhvi.
"I think in my career so far there have only been a handful of scripts that have made me feel like if I’m not a part of this, I’ll die,” Janhvi adds as the video ends with Sharan cheering for the actress and dropping hints about a possible sequel to the film.
Mr. & Mrs. Mahi marks Rajkummar and Janhvi’s second collaboration after the 2021 Hardik Mehta-directed horror comedy Roohi. It is also the second time Janhvi will be teaming up with Sharan Sharma after Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020).
Backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, Mr. & Mrs. Mahi is slated to release in theatres on May 31.
