Jamtara: Sabka Number Ayega Season 2 — a Netflix show that takes us back to the stories of cybercrime gangs and phishing scams in the backyards of Jharkhand’s Jamtara district — offers new characters, fresh political rivalries and innovative scams in a gripping tale that stays true to its premise. We take a look at some of the new elements introduced in Season 2 and what worked for us.

New political rivalry

Season 2 sees the return of Sunny (Sparsh Srivastava) — a cybercrime mastermind who lost the use of one of his legs after getting shot at in the first season — as an important character. However, it is his wife Gudiya (Monika Pawar) who shines in this season as a political underdog pitted against Brajesh Bhaan (Amit Sial) in an Assembly election by his rival Ganga Devi (Seema Pahwa).

This new political rivalry is at the heart of the Season 2, with scams, brawls, murders and police investigation running simultaneously. Phishing remains important in the show as a means of amassing money for the elections, and this is where Sunny and his cousin Rocky (Anshumaan Pushkar) play a vital part in helping Gudiya.

New characters

The show also introduces new characters — some memorable and some not-so-memorable. The one with the strongest screen presence is Rinku Mandal (Ravi Chahar). Rivalling Sunny’s prowess at phishing, Rinku is a down-on-his-luck man from Jamtara who returns to his village after nearly getting caught trying to shoddily scam men in Noida through dating apps. He finds his way into Brajesh’s good graces, becomes a phishing scam asset for the antagonist, gets abducted and ends up in a catch-22 when he is asked to kill a man he loves. We surely hope to see more of him in the coming season.

Sunny finds his new followers in school boys Gopi (Sarthak Joshi) and Abbas (Kartikey Raj). They assist him in rallying their classmates to the new scam that Sunny plots.

Dimple (Surabhi Verma) is another new character that leaves us entertained. Dimple, a phishing victim of Bacchu (Aatm Prakash Mishra), one of Brajesh’s henchmen and Rocky’s friends, falls in love with Bacchu and the two get married. She later plays a pivotal role in helping Gudiya and Sunny scam Brajesh.

New scams

Jamtara continues to show new tricks used by scammers to dupe people. With growing awareness about phishing scams, it’s becoming harder to scam people using the same old formula. And with more people refusing to share OTPs, CVVs and card details over the phone, Season 2 highlights some new and innovative techniques used by cybercriminals to dupe people.

Sunny hatches a new scam using a Kaun Banega Crorepati-style gaming show, Khel Karodo Ka (KKK). His team of scammers send messages to victims claiming that they won the prize money and that they would have to call a certain number to claim the reward. When the victims call, they are asked to deposit Rs 25,000 as a government-mandated tax to claim the prize money.

New beginnings

The final episode of Season 2 is high-strung, with Gudiya, Sunny and Rocky’s plan of sabotaging Brajesh’s election campaign becoming clear to Brajesh. Rocky meets an unsavoury end the night before the elections, leaving Gudiya and Sunny fearing an attack from Brajesh and his people. But the season ends with Brajesh facing defeat as Gudiya manages to win the elections using the phishing money that she and her aides stole from her political rival. As opposed to the nail-biting ending of Season 1, Season 2 wraps up with the beginning of Gudiya’s political career, setting up the plot for a revenge-filled Season 3.
