Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are set to reprise their roles as the mother-daughter duo in Freaky Friday 2, a sequel to the 2003 comedy, Curtis has confirmed.

The Everything Everywhere All at Once actress on Friday shared a picture with Lindsay on Instagram and tagged Disney and Disney Studios, the entertainment company which distributed the film back in 2003.

“I can't tell you how many times my daughter and I watched this movie when she was little. Both women do such an amazing job at their roles,” a fan wrote in the comments.

Curtis also shared a still from the film, featuring the duo as Tess and Anna Coleman. With just a green tick mark emoji in the caption, the actress confirmed Disney’s greenlighting of the sequel.

Canadian filmmaker Nisha Ganatra has been roped in to direct the Freaky Friday sequel. She is known for helming the 2020 film The High Note starring Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross, as well as 2019’s Late Night which featured Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson. Recently, Ganatra has directed several episodes of Hulu’s Welcome to Chippendale’s.

On Saturday, the Hollywood veteran posted a picture with Ganatra and Jordan Weiss, who has been tapped to write the screenplay of the film. However, Lindsay was missing from the picture which was probably taken at a cafe.

“Girl power! We are just missing a hot redhead and the team would be complete. @lindsaylohan @nisha.ganatra @jweissy @disney,” Curtis wrote in the caption, alluding to Lindsay’s red-haired character in the film.

Freaky Friday follows the story of a mother and her teenage daughter whose bodies get swapped after receiving cryptic fortunes at a Chinese restaurant. As they navigate each other’s lives, they gain newfound understanding and empathy. Being polar opposites of each other, the duo learns valuable lessons along the way while finding a way to reverse the switch.

Disney released Freaky Friday in 2003, which amassed USD 160 million at the global box office. Andrew Gunn, who had backed the previous film, is reportedly producing the sequel along with former Disney executive Kristin Burr.

Lindsay was recently seen in Netflix’s romantic comedy Irish Wish and appeared in a cameo role in the Mean Girls musical film released this year. She has Netflix’s Our Little Secret in the pipeline, which also stars Kristin Chenoweth and Ian Harding.

Curtis, who won an Oscar for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once in the best supporting actress category, is set to feature in the movie adaptation of the popular video game Borderlands alongside Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart.

However, the release date for Freaky Friday 2 has not been announced yet.
