The teaser trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming film Superman took the internet by storm with over 250 million views on Youtube on the first day of its release on Thursday, emerging as “the most-viewed and most-talked about trailer” in the history of both DC and Warner Bros, the DC chief said on Saturday.
“Krypto really did take us home: With over 250 million views and a million social posts, Superman is officially the most viewed and the most talked about trailer in the history of both DC and Warner Bros,” the 58-year-old filmmaker-producer wrote in an Instagram post.
Thanking fans for making the film achieve this feat, Gunn added, “This is because of all of you: thank you! We’re incredibly grateful and, most of all, excited to share this movie with you in July. Happy Holidays.”
Soon after its release, the video was trending at the first position on YouTube. The two-minute-19-second-long teaser offers a glimpse of David Corenswet’s eponymous hero, his pet dog Krypto, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Isabela Merced as Hawk Girl. It hints at Corenswet’s Superman facing off against his arch-nemesis Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult.
Several DC superheroes are set to make their debut in the upcoming film. Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner from the Green Lantern corps, Isabela Merced as Hawk Girl and Anthony Corrigan as Metamorpho will appear in the film.
The Superman teaser outperformed many of the DC teasers this year. The first Joker: Folie à Deux trailer opened with 167 million views in the first 24 hours of its release, while the trailer of Inside Out 2, the highest-grossing movie of the year, garnered 157 million views. However, Marvel’s trailer for Deadpool and Wolverine starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman remains the most-watched trailer of all time with 365 million views.
Gunn’s upcoming movie, previously titled Superman: Legacy, is the first film in DCU's Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. Known for directing the Guardian of the Galaxy films, The Suicide Squad (2021) and the original Max series Peacemaker (2022), Gunn has also written the screenplay for the upcoming superhero movie.
