James Gunn’s upcoming film Superman: Legacy will now be titled Superman, the DC chief announced in an Instagram post on Friday after the first day of filming.
“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” Gunn wrote alongside a close-up shot of the Kyptonian’s costume.
Announcing that the film will be released in theatres in July next year, Gunn went on to reveal that when he locked the second draft, he was sure that the title should be Superman instead of Superman: Legacy, which he had previously decided after finishing the first draft.
“When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025,” the 57-year-old filmmaker wrote.
The Politician star David Corenswet is playing the eponymous superhero alongside House of Cards actress Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane in the upcoming film. British actor Nicholas Hoult is set to play Superman’s arch-enemy Lex Luthor, while the rest of the cast includes Anthony Carrigan, Skyler Gisondo, Nathan Fillon, Isabela Mercad and Edi Gathegi.
Known for directing the Guardian of the Galaxy films, The Suicide Squad (2021) and the original Max series Peacemaker (2022), Gunn has also written the screenplay for the upcoming superhero movie.
Co-produced by DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, who has also produced Aquaman films and The Conjuring franchise, Superman will hit theatres globally on July 11, 2025.
