James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water inched closer to the Rs 200-crore club after its first week at the box office in India, according to box office reports.

The sci-fi adventure earned Rs 193 crore nett in India at the end of its first week in theatres, as per Box Office India figures.

Avatar 2: The Way of Water had an opening day collection of Rs 40.3 crore in India, the second biggest among Hollywood films. Only the 2019 Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Endgame had registered higher collections (Rs 53 crore) on Day 1 in India back in 2019. The film had a blockbuster opening weekend, collecting Rs 150 crore in four days.

The film has earned a total of $609.7 million at the global box office, according to Box Office Mojo. Out of this, $70.5 million came from China alone, followed by $37 million from France, $32.1 million from Korea and $26.5 million from India.

With Christmas weekend approaching, trade analysts predict that the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster Avatar will cross the Rs 250-crore mark soon. With Ranveer Singh-starrer Cirkus receiving lukewarm response from the audience, Avatar 2 is likely to draw more viewers to theatres in India.

Avatar: The Way of Water takes the story of the human-turned Na’vi Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) forward. The film is set in the alien planet Pandora, more than a decade after the events of the first film. Jake is now married to the Na’vi Princess Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and they have four kids together. Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton, Cliff Curtis and Trinity Bliss are also part of this visual epic.
