Avatar: The Way of Water, directed by James Cameron, has collected USD 1.51 billion nett so far worldwide, replacing Top Gun: Maverick (which earned USD 1.48 billion nett) as the biggest film of 2022.
The movie opened to a collection of Rs 40.5 crore nett in India on day — the second-highest box office opener for a Hollywood film in the Indian market. It has collected Rs 354 crore nett in India so far. If this streak continues, the sci-fi adventure will soon unseat Avengers: Endgame (with Rs 367 crore nett) as the highest-grossing Hollywood film of all time here.
James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) remains the highest grossing film of all time with USD 2.9 billion in its kitty. His romantic tragedy Titanic (1997) is third on the list with collections worth USD 2.2 billion. The Way of Water, which is a sequel to Avatar, has already emerged as the 10th highest scoring film of all time globally, and is soon likely to cross the lifetime collections of The Avengers (2012) and The Lion King (2019). The two films had lifetime collections of USD 1.518 billion and USD 1.61 billion, respectively.
The events of Avatar: The Way of Water take place more than a decade after the first film. The film revolves around Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their kids. Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Jamie FLatters, Britain Dalton, Cliff Curtis and Trinity Bliss are among the cast of this magnum opus.
