Netflix on Wednesday dropped a quirky mashup featuring characters from teen dramedies Never Have I Ever and Sex Education as part of their year-ender playback, with Jackie Shroff taking the centre stage as he settles the Rotis-Motis debate and feeds his popular anda kadipatta to Maitreyi Ramakrishnan’s Devi.

“Idhar Anda Kadipatta, udhar Rotis- ye Netflix ke bhidus ko khaana ekdum mast samajhta hai (Anda Kadipatta on one hand and Rotis on the other – the Netflix enthusiasts are well aware of what is cooking),” wrote the streaming platform alongside the playback video on Instagram.

For the unversed, the Rotis-Motis debate originates from the story of Sex Education. The protagonist Otis ((played by Asa Butterfield) is involved in a love triangle with his longtime crush Maeve Wiley (played by Emma Mackey) and the feisty leader of the Untouchable clique Ruby Matthews (played by Mimi Keene). Fans rooting for Otis and Maeve call the pair ‘Motis’, while those who ship Otis and Ruby call the prospective couple ‘Rotis’. Nevertheless, Otis settles with neither of them and remains single at the end of the season.

The opening sequence of the video showcases Jackie conversing with Maitreyi Ramakrishnan’s Devi Vishwakumar from Never Have I Ever.

The mashup makes an allusion to Jackie’s viral reel in which he shared his famous recipe for anda kadipatta. Another highlight of the video is a subtle reference to Jackie’s efforts to fight global warming. The 66-year-old actor is often seen carrying a potted spider plant with himself in public.

The next sequence of the video capitalises on Jackie’s signature style of speaking. The actor awes the audience with his take on the Motis-Rotis debate as he chooses Ruby over Maeve. He unbuttons his shirt with swag to reveal a Team Rotis jersey.

While the final season of Never Have I Ever premiered in June 2023, Season 4 of Sex Education was released in September 2023.
