J-pop duo YOASOBI’s Idol, the opening song of the popular 2023 anime series Oshi no Ko, has become the fastest track to reach 400 million streams on Japanese music ranking chart Oricon and the tenth most-streamed track on Apple's Music Top 100: Global list.
According to Oricon, the song has been played over 10 million times in the last week alone, maintaining the top position on the chart for the 19th consecutive week. The song beat Japanese pop band Official HIGE DANdism’s Subtitle which held the top position for 18 weeks in 2022.
This is the fourth time that YOASOBI has crossed the 400-million-streams milestone on Oricon. Their songs Into The Night (800 million streams), Monster (500 million streams) and Ultramarine (500 million streams) achieved the feat in 2021.
The song portrays a Japanese idol with a dual nature. One facet presents her as an adored and flawless idol among her fans, while the other reveals her as an ordinary girl grappling with challenges in her personal life.
Idol brings out the spirit of the anime Oshi no Ko, which takes us through the highs and lows of Japan's entertainment industry through the lives of a famous idol and a doctor who get a second chance at life after being reborn as twins.
Oshi no Ko is currently streaming on Netflix and HiDive.
