Independence Day box office: Stree 2 crosses Rs 60-crore mark, Vedaa earns Rs 6.3 crore

Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor-starrer Stree 2 has emerged as the biggest opener among Hindi films in 2024, raking in Rs 64.80 crore nett on Day 1, as per figures with industry data-tracking platform Sacnilk.

Hrithik Roshan-starrer Fighter previously held the record of highest opening day collection of Rs 23.5 crore nett in 2024.

Stree 2, a sequel to the 2018 horror-comedy blockbuster Stree, debuted on Independence Day, earning Rs 55.40 crore nett. Also featuring Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee and Pankaj Tripathi, the Amar Kaushik-helmed film amassed an additional Rs 9.40 crore nett from the paid previews on Wednesday.

These numbers are particularly noteworthy given that the 2018 original movie took seven days to reach the Rs 60-crore mark in India.

Stree 2 boasted a remarkable 75.09% occupancy rate on Thursday, making it the second biggest opener for a Hindi film ever, following Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan (Rs 65.5 crore nett) last year.

Stree 2 takes viewers back to the town of Chanderi, where Rajkummar Rao’s Vicky and Shraddha Kapoor’s unnamed mysterious woman must team up again to face a new adversary. The plot unfolds as Sarkata, a new threat, wreaks havoc in the village, prompting the residents to seek help from the enigmatic Stree.

Stree 2 is packed with star-studded cameos — Varun Dhawan makes a return as Bhediya and is featured in a musical number alongside Shraddha Kapoor. Moreover, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar also makes his entry into the supernatural comedy universe in a special role.

Alongside Stree 2, other major releases on Thursday included the Akshay Kumar-starrer Khel Khel Mein, and John Abraham’s Vedaa. While the Mudassar Aziz-helmed comedy managed to rake in Rs 5 crore nett in India on Day 1, Nikkhil Advani’s action thriller amassed Rs 6.3 crore nett at the domestic box office.
