Universal Pictures on Wednesday dropped a teaser for the live-action version of popular animated film series How To Train a Dragon, offering a glimpse of the period when Hiccup and Toothless met for the first time.
The one-minute-15-second-long teaser begins with a shot of waves crashing upon the shores of the Isle of Berk, which is home to many Vikings and dragons as seen in the popular animated film series. We are soon introduced to Hiccup (Mason Thames), the neglected son of Chief Stoick the Vast, sitting on a cliff in a pensive mood and watching the waves crash.
When all the other Vikings set out to slay dragons, their bitter enemies, Hiccup tries to back out. However, he eventually ventures out to kill one upon his father’s orders while navigating a world torn by fear, rivalry and misunderstanding.
In the process, he stumbles upon Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon, whom he soon befriends, making for an emotional moment for both fans of the animated film as well as those awaiting the live-action.
Gerard Butler, who voiced Chief Stoick the Vast in the animated film series, is reprising his role in the live-action. While Nico Parker will be voicing the fierce and ambitious Astrid, Nick Frost will lend his voice to the village’s quirky blacksmith Gobber.
The film also stars Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Gabriel Howell (Bodies), Bronwyn James (Wicked), Harry Trevaldwyn (Smothered), Ruth Codd (The Midnight Club), Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Murray McArthur (Game of Thrones).
How to Train Your Dragon is written, produced and directed by Dean DeBlois, who has directed the animated films. It is also produced by Marc Platt and Adam Siegel.
Adapted from the How To Train Your Dragon book series by Cressida Cowell, the animated film franchise created by DreamWorks Animation captivated fans globally following its debut in 2010. It went on to win four Academy Award nominations and grossed more than USD 1.6 billion at the global box office.
How To Train Your Dragon live-action is slated to hit theatres globally on June 13, 2025.
