Cast members of House of the Dragon on Friday discussed whether Rhaenyra Targaryen or her half-brother Aegon II Targaryen would be a better ruler in a new promotional video ahead of the release of the second season of the Game of Thrones spin-off series.
In the promo video, the cast members named reasons why each of the rulers would make a good monarch. The upcoming season of the fantasy series will be available to stream on JioCinema from June 16.
Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays Aegon in the series, elucidated why Rhaenyra would be a good queen. “Rhaenyra is very strong-willed, very driven. Intelligent, she makes very informed decisions. She's got a good heart,” he said.
Emma D'Arcy, who portrays the role Rhaenyra in the show, explained how her character has a deft hand at solving problems because of not having prior battle training. “I think maybe a bizarre by-product of not having a more formal training in battle strategy is that she comes at problems from a different angle,” she said.
Steve Toussaint, the actor for Corlys, applauded Rhaenyra for avoiding warfare and caring about her subjects, while Phoebe Campbell expressed her excitement over the idea of the character’s face being engraved on coins.
Aegon, who came off as a detestable character in the first season, didn’t find many to bat for him among the cast members. “There's absolutely nothing I can say about Aegon, why he should be king. He shouldn't,” said Bethany Antonia.
The actor for Aegon, Glynn-Carney, defended his character, saying that Rhaenyra’s half-brother is misunderstood. He mentioned that Aegon would make a good king if he learns how to “channel his fire”.
Campbell, however, teased a different side of the character for the upcoming season. “In Season 2, you see a different side of Aegon. You're just like, 'Aw, you're just a sad boy. You wanna do right but you also want power,” she revealed in the promo video.
Based on George RR Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon revolves around House Targaryen’s history, spanning Aegon’s Conquest to the Dance of the Dragons and following their father King Viserys I’s death. A constant power struggle ensues among his heirs, leading to a tumultuous era.
