House of Dragon actress Milly Alcock will play Superman’s cousin Supergirl a.k.a Kara Zor-El in DC Universe’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, DC Studios chief James Gunn has confirmed in a social media post.
“Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU,” wrote the Guardians of Galaxy writer-director on Instagram, sharing a screenshot of a news report confirming Alcock’s role in the upcoming film.
Gunn and Peter Safran (also the Co-chairman and Co-CEO of DC Studios) had reportedly screen-tested multiple actors including Meg Donnelly who voiced Supergirl in DC animated movies Legion of Superheroes (2023) and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One (2024).
“I first became aware of her (Alcock) in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl,” added Gunn, elaborating on his decision to cast Alcock in the role.
According to Gunn, the 23-year-old Australian actress “embodies Kara” as envisioned by comic book writer Tom King, illustrator Bilquis Evely and screenwriter Ana Nogueira.
“So excited to be a part of the DC fam - thank you so much to @jamesgunn for trusting me with Kara / Supergirl,” Alcock wrote on Instagram, thanking Gunn for trusting her with the role of Supergirl.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is based on King and Evely’s eight-issue miniseries of the same name. It follows Kara’s adventures in space with her superhero dog Krypto as she embarks on a mission to help the alien girl Ruthye avenge the death of her father.
King also shared the news on Instagram, calling Gunn’s choice for Supergirl “perfect casting”. “Couldn’t be more excited to see Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow, the world @bilquis built, brought to life by this incredible actor,” said the 45-year-old comic book writer, expressing his enthusiasm for the forthcoming film.
Alcock will reportedly appear in another DC Studios project before starring in her solo feature.
