The term ‘prevue’ got us talking and now when it’s finally out, there’s something new to spot each time we watch the two-minute-14-second promo of Shah Rukh Khan’s next action biggie Jawan, slated to hit the theatres on September 7.
The trailer’s highlights include a bald Shah Rukh Khan breaking into a jig to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay’s Bekarar karke hamein (Bees Saal Baad, 1962) inside an underground train, his voiceover hinting at an antihero character that’s reminiscent of his Don and Don 2 roles, composer Anirudh Ravichander’s King Khan track, Deepika Padukone in a red sari, a gun-toting Nayanthara in uniform and a feisty girl gang that addresses Shah Rukh as ‘Chief’.
The gang features Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Ridhi Dogra, Lehar Khan, Aaliyah Qureishi, Girija Oak Godbole and Ashlesha Thakur. Going by what happened the last time Shah Rukh had his own girl gang — in the 2007 sports drama Chak De! India — one can only expect twice the fireworks in director Atlee’s Jawan.
Priyamani
The popular actress who has done films in multiple languages is seen in the Jawan promo firing merrily. Jawan will be her second collaboration with Shah Rukh, after her appearance in the superhit number One two three four in Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express. With films such as Paruthiveeran, Chaarulatha and Vishnuvardhana to her credit, Priyamani recently became a household name for playing Suchitra Tiwari in Raj and DK’s Prime Video series The Family Man.
Sanya Malhotra
After making her debut in Aamir Khan’s Dangal, the actress and trained dancer won hearts with her performances in Pataakha, Badhaai Ho, Photograph, Pagglait, Meenakshi Sundareshwar and Kathal. In the Jawan prevue, Sanya is seen engaged at work in a laboratory. Her next film is Meghna Gulzar’s Sam Bahadur, opposite Vicky Kaushal.
Sanjeeta Bhattacharya
The singer, songwriter and actor is a graduate of Berklee College of Music. The Delhi girl wears a short, curly hairdo and a no-nonsense expression in the Jawan prevue. The daughter of artist Sanjay Bhattacharya was seen in the Netflix series Feels Like Ishq and The Broken News. The multi-faceted girl is part of Shuruaat, which has been Grammy-nominated for Best Global Music Album.
Ridhi Dogra
Popular on television, Ridhi Dogra is currently riding high on the success of her web shows Asur, Badtameez Dil and TVF Pitchers. After Lakadbaggha, Ridhi has two upcoming big releases, Jawan and Tiger 3.
Girija Oak Godbole
Remember Aamir Khan’s love interest in Taare Zameen Par? That’s Girija, the daughter of Marathi actor Girish Oak. Girija, who was seen in Shor in the City, owns a sustainable clothing brand, Fresh Lime Soda, for which she travels extensively.
Lehar Khan
Lehar Khan had featured in Brahmastra: Part One- Shiva. Besides a few noted short films, she has acted in the web series Dahan and Confessions of an Indian Teenager on Channel V.
Ashlesha Thakur
The young actress turned heads in the two seasons of The Family Man as Manoj Bajpayee and Priyamani’s teenage daughter, Dhriti. It would be interesting to watch the 19-year-old with her screen mommy Priyamani, also part of the Jawan girl gang.
Aaliyah Qureishi A Mumbai-based pop artist, Aaliyah has appeared in Netflix’s Eternally Confused and Eager for Love. She had released a six-track album, Why Should I?, in 2022.
