HBO has renewed its post-apocalyptic drama series The Last of Us for a second season after only two episodes have been aired.
The third episode of the series version of the PlayStation video game is set to run this Monday on HBO and HBO Max. The show is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar in India with new episodes dropping every Monday.
Created by HBO’s Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin along with original game writer Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us features Game of Thrones actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in lead roles alongside Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, Nick Offerman and Anna Torv.
On Friday evening, the premium cabler on Friday took to Twitter to announce the news. It posted an image of the leading duo — Jole (Pascal) and Ellie (Ramsey) — with the caption “The journey continues. #TheLastofUs will return for another season on HBO Max”.
The premiere episode, which came out earlier this month, has been HBO’s second-most-watched series debut in a decade and has since climbed to 22 million views across all platforms. The second episode also saw a jump of 22 per cent in viewership.
The official logline of the series reads, “It takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”
